FatStudent Welcomes Facebook Connect

by imo.udom on Mar.23, 2010, under LatestNewsComponent, Random

We are happy to announce that we’ve implemented Facebook Connect into Monday’s release of FatStudent (code named: Showtime).  Our development team has been working very hard to get the integration in place and make sure it does not affect our current users.  Following the agile spirit, we have decided upon an iterative approach for our FB Connect integration. Right now all that we’ve implemented is facebook registration / login, but in the weeks to come we plan on rolling out new features.

You may be wondering why we went down this path – the answer is for YOU, our users, of course!

Before creating FatStudent we surveyed of over 1400 UK University students on job searching, current online recruitment methods and how they can be improved.  One of the questions asked was “…which is the best method for searching and finding a job?”   Referrals from friends and family scored the highest out of all possible options listed.

Integration with Facebook connect is our first step towards helping our users leverage their network of friends and family to find a job.

If you use the FatStudent connect feature please let us know.  As always, let us know about any bugs or issues you see in this feature or any others we have launched thus far.  We love hearing from you!

Here is a brief summary of our Facebook Connect Integration:

  • Registration – new users are able to use facebook connect to register and start finding their ideal part-time job with the click on a button.

The Best Part-Time Jobs for Students

by stuart.fattigen on Mar.10, 2010, under Part-Time Jobs in London for Students

For the average student, finding a job to help pay for expenses or even school is difficult.  Balancing typical part time jobs with full time school is a challenge.  For those in London, finding part-time work is even more of a challenge simply because there are plenty of people ready and willing to commit to a job without the challenge of scheduling around school.  So, looking for a part time job in London can be difficult.  However, there are London student jobs available for those willing to look and some industries actually prefer to hire students over non-students for some positions.

Temporary Work

One of the best places to look for work as a student in London is to register with temporary agencies.  For even the most unskilled student, there will be temporary work available.  Filing and other menial tasks are often needed on a temporary basis and scheduling can be much more flexible with an agency than with other jobs.  For the person looking to only work a few days a week, this can be a great way to maximize the pay during those hours that they are available to work.  For temporary student jobs London is a great place to search.  They are always available and give the worker real life experience they can use once they have graduated.

Student Services Jobs

Often times, universities will have openings for student worker positions throughout the campus.  These jobs are always geared toward assuring the student has plenty of time to study and the scheduling, by its very nature, is incredibly flexible.  These jobs may not pay well but the experiences can prove invaluable once the student has graduated and is in the real job market.  They may even begin a career.  Places where one will typically find student workers at a university include the library, dormitories and even food service.  Working in the library gives the student the additional benefit of placing the student where they need to be for research for classes and often times the student will be able to do some of their school work and research while on the clock.

Part time evening jobs in London

For a part time evening job London has much to offer students.  These are some of the most popular for students simply because they are easy to schedule and only conflict if the hours become more and more close to full time work.  However, if they stay part time, evening work such as bartending or working as an order taker at a restaurant are both great options for many students.  The work can be challenging but the pay can be excellent between the wage and tips from customers.  Oftentimes, forgoing nights to the pub on popular nights for the London college crowd by working at the pub will pay well enough that only two or three nights of work are really needed to pay for many regular expenses.  Additionally, by working on those popular nights out, you are guaranteeing that you are not spending your pay cheque on being out at the pub.

Host and hostess positions are also available in some larger venues where you greet and seat customers.  These positions are typically reserved for higher end clubs and VIP areas.  However, they can be quite lucrative if you can find one.  A bar back is another position that is often quite flexible in hours but may not pay as well.  This person does all the heavy lifting and basically assists.

by stuart.fattigen on Mar.08, 2010, under Part-Time Jobs in London for Students

For the student in London looking for part time work, there are few options that are better than getting one of the many London student jobs of waiting tables at a restaurant or pub.  As part-time jobs become harder find all over the UK, there is almost always a constant need for quality waiters and waitresses.  There seems to always be part time job vacancies in London for waiters because the turn over for wait staff is quite high.  This high demand is one of the reasons why waiting tables is a highly recommended as one of the jobs that all students should consider applying for.

High Demand Empowers the Student Worker

Because there is a constant demand, the employers are more willing to listen to the employee when it comes to scheduling.  Often times, a student will find that an employer will hire them and then begin trying to change their hours or add shifts when the student has specifically told the employer that they can only work certain days and hours to work around their classes and leave time for homework.  Waiting jobs in London, however, are always being filled so the student has the power to tell the employer that they must honour their previously arranged schedule or they will simply find another restaurant that will abide by the schedule the student worker has to follow so they can make it to class.  The demand for quality waiters really makes waiting tables an excellent choice for part-time work in London.

Evening Schedules Work Best

For the typical university student, their classes are in the morning or early afternoon, leaving them free to work or study in the evenings.  The highest demand for waiters and waitresses is for the evening shift as well.  While an employer would like an employee that is able to work earlier, they will happily take an eager employee that can work three evenings during the week and a weekend shift or two.  If you are looking for a part time job in London and are a student, finding a job at a restaurant is one of the easiest to find that matches up with your scheduling needs.

Waiting Tables is Rewarding

Of the all jobs available for students, waiting tables can be one of the most rewarding ones.  From the perspective of learning about life, waiting tables makes the student more appreciative of those who choose to work in the service industry.  On top of this, waiting tables is an excellent opportunity to get used to dealing with people and talking to strangers more comfortable.  These skills become very useful later during interviews and in the business world in general.  Finally, waiting tables is quite lucrative.  A good waiter or waitress can make money even on a slower night for the establishment.  If a student can get a part-time job at busier or more expensive restaurant, the pay is even better.  While the shift can be quite gruelling, the need to work more days or more hours to help pay for expenses is lessened by the tips they receive each night they work.

How to Get a Summer Job

by stuart.fattigen on Mar.01, 2010, under Part-Time Jobs in London for Students

For the student looking for a part-time summer work in London, the process of finding a position can be a bit daunting.  The typical student has limited hours they are available for work and limited hours to go seeking employment as well.  In the UK, student jobs are available; however they do take some work to find and secure and many employers actually like to hire students for various reasons.

Beginning your student job search in London

For the beginning of your summer student search is perfect for starting with a multi tiered approach to find employment.  The first thing to do is to begin networking.  For college students, the easiest networking is to simply ask friends and classmates if they know of any company with positions available for students.  If a friend or classmate happens to work at the place that is hiring, it can help you immensely by giving you a reference as well as an insider’s perspective of how the company treats its student workers.  Again, there are plenty of student jobs in London so there should be no pressure to take the first thing available if the person working there warns you that it is not a great place to work as a student.

The second tier of your job search is going to be keeping an eye out on campus as well as on the web for job postings.  Many employers that prefer helping college students out and have plenty of flexibility with scheduling work will post on campus.  Many of the colleges in London have student services divisions specifically designed to help match students to jobs while in school and to help fill summer student jobs in London and the surrounding areas of the UK.

Get Ready for the Interview

Everyone has advice for interviewing well and entire books and eBooks have been written on the topic.  The best advice while trying to secure any of the student jobs in London that you have applied for is to be prepared for the interview.  What this means is not to have answers prepared for normal job interview questions but to be able to show that you have knowledge of the company you are interviewing for as well as questions about the company ahead of time.  Even for part time work as a student, this can get you the job over other applicants.
